Spider Silk Fabrics Planned For Use in Performance Apparel
Polartec, the company behind Primaloft insulation and Kraig Biocraft Laboratories, a biotech company focused on the development and commercialization of spider silk, announce plans to bring fabrics made from spider silk to the performance apparel market.
What Are the Benefits of Spider Silk Performance Fabric?
According to Kim Thompson, Kraig Laboratories founder and CEO, spider silk fibers are thin, lightweight, flexible, resilient, extraordinarily strong, and display strength-to-weight ratios comparable to aramid fibers (Note: para-aramid fibers are used to make Kevlar). In addition, to durability recombinant spider silks are also purported to have a physical properties of a “luxurious” handfeel and breathability. Also, they are renewable and biodegradable, so there is an environmental sustainability benefit as well.
